Local Philanthropist Believes a Dress Can Inspire Success
Kim Peters, President and Founder of The Prom Shop Project, will speak on the topic of “Women and Philanthropy” at the Democratic Women of Denton County’s inaugural event on Sunday, June 28, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Lewisville Municipal Annex Community Room, 1197 W Main Street in Lewisville.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their gently worn prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, shoes and accessories to donate to the Prom Shop Project. Tax receipts will be available. Volunteers will collect, clean and provide formal dresses to students who are unable to afford them.

Kim wanted to find a way to have a positive impact on young women in her community and decided to open a dress shop where girls could gather and inspire one another. Girls Inc., the national nonprofit youth organization thought it was a great idea and provided the initial start up funding.

The Prom Shop Project was initially stocked with 75 dresses. This spring, eight years later, her organization provided 5,000 free prom dresses for girls who could not afford to buy a dress for their prom. Says Kim, “over 75% of the girls receiving dresses come from families that live on less than $15,000 a year.”

In addition, the President and Co-Founder of the Democratic Women of Denton County, Judith Ford, will speak about the new organization’s purpose and goals. Says Ford, "We want to promote the influence of Democratic women in Denton County politics and government. We believe that in helping educate the community about the democratic process, we can positively influence the issues that affect us, our families, and our future."

There will be a drawing for a free haircut and style by Sara McRoberts, and chances to win other prizes. Attendees will have an opportunity to have their photo taken with "Barack and Hillary" cut out figures, and receive a free wristband commemorating the event.
